December Walk & Lunch - Sandstone Trail - 6.5 miles

Sunday, 14 December 2008 - 10:15am
The walk starts off across fields and then joins up with the Sandstone Trail to climb up to the top of Woodhouse Hill. The view on a clear day is fantastic - it is a shame that you overlook the industrial area of Rocksavage. We then make our way back down, leaving the Sandstone Trail for a while to join the Delamere Way before rejoining the trail back to the pub.

There is nothing difficult in this walk and with the sandy nature of the ground it won’t be too muddy either.

Directions: Head down the M56 and come off at Junction 14 signed Helsby and A56. At the roundabout turn left onto the A56 and follow the dual carriageway down to the traffic lights. Go straight through these lights and then turn right signed Alvanley into Primrose Lane. At the T-Junction turn right and at the next T-Junction turn right again and the pub is on the right hand side.

Address: White Lion, Manley Rd, Alvanley, Frodsham, Cheshire WA6 9DD. Tel: 01928 722949
£10 booking fee only - pay venue direct for what you eat.

January Walk & Lunch - Goostrey - 6 miles

Sunday, 11 January 2009 - 10:15am
An interesting walk in that it starts off down the main road in Goostrey but quickly takes you down leafy pathways, across numerous fields and then follows a section of the river before heading back to the pub for lunch.  It is around 6 miles and took me 3 hours including a couple of wrong turn but it is all on the flat.

Directions: From Alderley Edge take the Holmes Chapel road and follow over the Chelford roundabout. When you see the Yellow Broom restaurant on your left you want to take the next turning on your right signed Goostrey.  Turn immediately right again and follow this lane over the railway bridge to the pub on your right. From Knutsford take the A50 towards Holmes Chapel and then turn left for Goostrey and station and the pub will be on your left. From the M6 come off at Junction 17 for Holmes Chapel and turn left for the centre of Holmes Chapel. At the first roundabout turn right and then immediately left for Alderley Edge. Follow this road for probably about a mile, passing the viaduct on your left and then when you come to the sharp bend to the right you need to turn left here and then immediately right and follow this lane over the railway bridge to the pub on your right.

Address: The Red Lion, 3 Station Road, Goostrey, Cheshire, CW4 8PJ. Tel: 01477 532033

February Walk and Lunch - Nantwich/Wrexham Borders - 5 miles

Sunday, 8 February 2009 - 10:15am
A walk which combines the views of the Peckforton Hills with the route of the Sandstone Trail. I would say that 3 out of the five miles are up and down hills. As soon as you leave the pub and cross the road you are climbing but non of the walk was really too much of a strain and the good thing about the walk as there were only about 3 stiles in total! The views were fantastic - we could see the towers near Runcorn, Jodrell bank and snow on the tops of the hills in Wales. The pub offers a Sunday Carvery - always good to fill you up or for the vegetarians amongst you they had a hazelnut roast - in addition to the other items on the menu which included sandwiches and jacket potatoes.

Directions: Head out of Nantwich on the A49 towards Wrexham and having passed through Burland and Faddiley you will come to a junction which meets the A49 where you can turn left for Whitchurch and right for Tarporley. Turn right and then first left after a couple of yards signed Wrexham which is the A534 and after a few miles you will see the Bickerton Poacher on your left. Alternatively come off the M56 at Junction 10 and follow the A49 towards Whitchurch. Having passed Tarporley bear right onto the A534 signed Wrexham and after a few miles you will see the Bickerton Poacher on your left.
